In my opinion, the best thing to make a house feel more homey is family pictures. Recently I snapped some photos of my siblings and our families and wanted a cute way to present them to my mom…ya know, rather than handing her the Costco envelope full of photos. This amazing collage frame dropped into my lap (thanks to the lovely people at Shaped Expressions). It has exactly the right amount of squares for all the photos I printed…I love when stuff like that happens.
Sadly, the frame was vandalized the next day. Don’t worry, I caught the offender. It wasn’t too hard. 😉
I love unpainted frames. They are a blank canvas ready for a little crafting to take place. This frame is about to see some serious crafting care of Deco Art paint and stencils.
Supplies:
-Collage Frame
-“School Bus” Yellow Multi-Surface Paint
-“White Birch” Multi-Surface Paint
-Houndstooth Stencil
-Stencil Brush
-patience
After painting the entire frame with White Birch paint, I began the stenciling process with the School Bus Yellow.
If you are nervous to start stenciling, don’t be. This is my very first time using stencils and I am hooked. I just laid stencil down and dabbed my stenciling brush on it. Don’t use strokes, just dab the paint on the frame. Lift the stencil and check out how crisp and uniform the design is.
Wait about 5 minutes and reposition the stencil overlapping a bit onto the previous design. This way it keeps the design going. Making it look like you used one giant stencil. I had fun seeing this frame completely transform.
Although I really like the bright color and crisp lines, it’s a bit too perfect. So I took some fine sand paper to it and then added some stain. I painted the stain on and quickly wiped it off leaving just the slightest hint of distressing.
Then I painted the inside of all the little frames with the School Bus Yellow paint. After adding all the photos (except the one I am still waiting on), I absolutely LOVE how it turned out. It’s fun to see my mom’s little family all in one frame. I hope she likes it…if not, I have no problem keeping it for myself. 🙂

Love it! Can you tell me where you got the stencil – was it part of a collection or by itself?

Hi there,
You can get the stencils at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, and A.C. Moore. I was actually provided the stencil by DecoArts. I love these stencils because they are thin and lay super flat. You will love it.

Thank you, Morena. My mom absolutely loved it, too. I was tempted to keep it for myself. 🙂
