Simple Embroidery Hoop Ornament by Madigan Made

I’m excited to join Kari for her Handmade Ornament series. I love making my own holiday decorations and I often try not to go out and buy new supplies… I like to work with what I have at home. When I was rooting through my craft stash last month, I came across these tiny embroidery hoops and realized that they could be a cute and easy way to create an ornament. I also found a snowflake-shaped felt applique that I picked up on clearance last year. It was the perfect size for the hoop… and it was covered in sequins and rhinestones! I knew the hoop and the felt shape could be combined to create a pretty and sparkly ornament. I love sparkle… especially this time of year!

Easy Snowflake Embroidery Hoop Ornament

Supplies used:

• Small (i.e. 3 or 4 inch) wooden embroidery hoop
• Pretty cotton fabric
• Scissors
• Felt applique shape (I used a snowflake)
• Craft paint
• Brushes
• Craft glue
• Ribbon

Instructions:

First, I opened up the hoop hardware and painted the interior and exteriors of the wooden hoops with a cobalt blue craft paint. I picked that color because it matched the blue in my snowflake shape. I allowed that paint to dry.

Then, I slipped a piece of red and white gingham fabric between the two hoops and screwed the hardware closed at the top while tightening the fabric taut in the hoop.
I used some scissors and trimmed the fabric close to the hoop. To keep the fabric from fraying and to help secure it even more, I brushed some craft glue along the exposed fabric edge.

Finally, I used some more craft glue and attached my felt and sequined snowflake to the front of the fabric on the hoop.

To hang the ornament from the tree, I just slipped a piece of coordinating ribbon through the hardware at the top of the hoop.

See? Super simple to make! There are a ton of different ways you can make this ornament. You can use any color for your fabric background or hoop… and any felt shape in the center, too!
I really love the combination of the deep cobalt blue with the red and white I used in this ornament. The colors and gingham pattern give it an Americana feel, but the metallic blue paint and sequins make the ornament still feel special and important for the holidays!
