I wanted to make a special friend a baby quilt, but I am not a big fan of the whole binding part of quilt making.  So I tried my hand at a bindless baby quilt and to my surprise this it only took my 1 hour to make…start to finish!
Supplies:
1 yard fabric (we’ll call fabric A)
1 1/2 yards coordinating fabric (fabric B)
1 1/2 yards of white flannel (I used this instead of batting)
Matching scraps (if you want to embellish with shapes)
Clear thread

Baby Blanket 1
Step 1: Cut 5 inches from the top of Fabric A.
Step 2: Cut a 3 inch strip of Fabric B making sure your strips is the width of Fabric A.  You will sew this 3 inch strip to the top of the large pieces of Fabic A.  Then sew the 5 inch strip of Fabric A to Fabric B.  This creates your quilt top.
Bindless-252520Baby-252520Quilt3_thumb-25255B2-25255DStep 3: Lay your backing (Fabric B) down right side up.  Lay you quilt top right side down on top of the backing.  Lay the flannel (or batting) on top of the back of your quilt top.  Square it off by making sure all sides are straight and equal length.

baby quilt in a day 4Step 4: Pin all the way around except for about a 5 inch opening at the top.
Baby Quilt TutorialStep 5: Starting at one end of the 5 inch opening, sew around the quilt stopping at the other end of the 5 inch opening. (1/4” seam allowance).
clip the cornersStep 6: Clip the corners.  Turn the quilt right side out using the 5 inch opening.
Pin it togetherStep 7: Iron the entire quilt nice and flat. Turn the raw edges of your opening under 1/4 inch and press with hot iron. Pin the edges together.Top stitch blanketStep 8: Starting at the pins sew a 1/8” top stitch all the way around the quilt.
diamondsStep 9: Cut 3 coordinating diamonds from your scrap stash (or get some perfectly matching fat quarters at the fabric store).  I made my diamonds bigger than the pink strip.  Pin the two outside diamonds in place; sew around using your clear thread. This not only looks super cute, but it helps tack both sides of the quilt together while giving the blanket a quilted look. Lastly, sew on the middle diamond.
Clear-252520Thread-252520sewing_thumb-25255B2-25255DStep 10: Just to complete the quilted look, I sewed around random diamonds on Fabric A with my clear thread.
Diamond PatternsStep 11: Iron it really good, fold it up and give to baby!
Baby-252520quilt-252520tutorial_thumb-25255B5-25255DI think she likes it!  I loved sewing this and plan to make many more! It was so easy; even a timid sewist can make this quilt!

My girls love leggings.  We have leggings in every color.  But I really want some that have a cute print and a little more personality.  I saw these adorable tights at Wal-mart and really found myself wishing they were leggings.  This is about the time I realized that I have a sewing machine and I kind of know how to use it.  I began to think of ways I could DIY TIGHTS INTO LEGGINGS.  So I bought them and rushed home to try the idea that was in my head.  This is one of those times when the idea worked perfectly!

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-2525201_thumb-25255B2-25255DSupplies:

Tights (old or new)

Sewing Machine

Matching Thread

Scissors

M&M’s and Diet Coke {optional, but why sew without them}Turn Tights into Leggings 2

Instructions:

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-2525203_thumb-25255B2-25255D1. Cut the heel and toe off and throw them away.

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-2525204_thumb-25255B2-25255D2.  Make sure the remaining squares are cut straight on top and bottom.  Cut the little squares in half, like above.
                 Turn Tights into Leggings 7

3.  Zigzag stitch the ends of each strip.  This photo only shows the bottoms zigzagged, but I ended up doing both sides.  Zigzag the bottom of the tights too.  So, now you should have a “ruffled” hem on all pieces.

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-2525208_thumb-25255B2-25255D

5.  Slide one of the strips on the leg just above the ruffled hem.

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-2525209_thumb-25255B2-25255D6.  Stitch into place right down the middle.

Turn-252520Tights-252520into-252520Leggings-25252010_thumb-25255B2-25255D7.  Slide the other strip above the first one and stitch into place.  Repeat everything on the other leg of the tights and you are done.

Turn Tights into Leggings 11

On the other tights I just did the zigzag stitch ruffle hem and left them like that.

I love both pairs!  They are adorable and SUPER quick and easy.

Remember this amazing Watermark Tee from our guest, Sweet Verbena.  It’s one of our favorite tutorials, so we wanted to try it on baby onesies.  I am so happy with how they turned out.  I am pretty sure I will never give plain white onesies again.  The Watermark Tee tutorial was so precise and easy to follow that I was pretty sure I couldn’t get it wrong.  I am kind of addicted to the whole process now. 🙂

Dyed Onesies SuppliesSupply List:

-clean onesie

-BLUE elmers glue

-RIT dye

RIT dye and Elmers Glue resistI wasn’t sure who well I would be able to “write” with the glue on a knit onesie, but I think the lack of perfection works for me.   Letting it dry was not very easy for the impatient-crafter that I am, but you HAVE to let it dry for the color-resist process to be successful.

Baby shower giftsTurned out pretty cute, right?  I really love the tie-dye effect of this particular onesie.  Make sure to watch our Craft it Forward episode on the Dyed Baby Onesies.  These are great baby shower gifts or make some for your little ones.

Hi! I’m Abby from Sew Much Ado. I love to blog, design patterns, and share tutorials. I always jump at the chance to hang out here at U-Create, and today’s post was no exception! I love this Fat Quarter series, and have to admit that I had trouble narrowing down my final project. There’s so many different things that can be done with a fat quarter, from home decor to crafts to clothing!

I love to make clothes for my three kids, and eventually decided to make this Baby Sailor Skirt tutorial to share with you today. I love that it can be made from just a fat quarter and some plain white scraps, and it comes together in no time…

Baby Sailor Skirt Free Pattern by sew much ado

The skirt itself is not super full, but the pleats allow your baby to still have enough room to move!

My little Lola is 13 months but is a small fry and wears 6-12 month clothing, so the measurements given will fit size 6-12 months best. Of course these directions can be used for any size with some adjusting, but you’ll likely want to add some width to your skirt pieces if you’re making a size larger than 6-12 months.
How to Make a Baby Sailor Skirt by Sew Much Ado

You could also change things up by adding back pleats as well which would give even more room for your little one (or big one) to move!

How to Make a Baby Sailor Skirt by Sew Much Ado

Ready to get sewing?

Supplies:
1 fat quarter
solid white cotton scrap – 8″x10″
scrap of piping
6 buttons
1″-2″ elastic – 17″

Directions:

*Seam allowances are 1/2″ unless otherwise noted.

Cut a 10″x22″ (the length of your fat quarter) rectangle from your fat quarter. Remember you can always use another fat quarter and piece the two together if you need added width for a larger size.

Cut a 4″x6″ rectangle from the fat quarter, fold it in half, and trim the bottom corner into a curve.

Fold the 10″x22″ piece in half widthwise, and match the fold of the curved piece to the fold of the larger piece. Use a rotary cutter to cut the larger piece from top to bottom, 1/2″ from the edge of the curved piece.

Cut two 4″x10″ pieces from the solid white scrap and press each in half lengthwise.

Right sides together, stitch one white piece to center skirt piece (center piece previously had the fold), matching raw edges. White piece fold will be facing outward.

Repeat using remaining solid white piece and opposite side of center skirt piece.

Repeat with outside edges of solid white pieces and remaining skirt pieces. Finish all stitched raw edges and press seams.

Re-fold white strips along initial fold line, tucking pleats to inside. Press well with steam.

Stitch along top of each pleat, 1/4″ from top raw edge, to secure in place.

Right sides together, stitch piping to curved piece, matching raw edges.

Press piping to wrong side of printed fabric.

Stitch curved piece to skirt close to edge, centering between pleats and matching top raw edges. You’ll also be stitching through part of the pleats underneath.

Stitch three buttons to each side of curved piece. Top of buttons should be 1″ from top edge to allow for waistband.

Right sides together, stitch center back seam. Finish raw edge and press seam.

Serge or zig zag stitch top of skirt to finish raw edge.

Stitch ends of elastic together using 1/4″ seam allowance. Press seam allowance open and stitch on each side of seam to secure ends.

Right sides together, pin elastic to top edge of skirt, matching center back seam to waistband seam. Stitch together using 1/4″ seam allowance, stretching elastic to fit top of skirt.

Press waistband upward and seam allowance toward skirt.

Press bottom edge 1″ toward wrong side. Press bottom edge another 1″ toward wrong side and topstitch, creating hem.

Great job!

DIY Baby Gown sewing tutorial

I love decorating onesies for baby shower gifts.  These outfits provide a personal touch and a one-of-a-kind baby gift.  Decorating a onesie can be as simple or as complicated as your creative skills will reach.

For this particular DIY baby gift tutorial, I bought a newborn onesie, 1/4 yard of red fabric and 1/2” elastic.

DIY Easy Baby Shower Gift

1.  Cut 2 rectangles at 8” x 15”.  If you want more ruffle at the top {where you sew it to the onesie} then make the rectangle wider.  The length is perfect for those tiny newborn bodies.

2. Sew both rectangles together by placing right sides together and sewing down the long sides. Use a 1/2” seam allowance.

3.  Serge (or zigzag stitch) to avoiding fraying fabric.

4.  Press the seams and top-stitch {like I did in this Nightgown Tutorial}, if you’d like.

DIY Newborn Gown by U Create

5.  Serge (or zigzag) the bottom to avoid fraying fabric.

6.  Fold the bottom up a little over half an inch. Press with hot iron.

7.  Hem the bottom edge: I put two pins in the hem where to mark the “no sew zone”.  This is the zone you will leave open for the elastic.  Start sewing at one pin and stop when you get to the other pin. Sew near the top of your serged edge to make sure you have plenty of room for the elastic to go around.

Baby Gown Onesie Tutorial

8.  Cut a 14” long piece of your 1/2” wide elastic.  Put a safety pin in one end and work it into the hem/casing.

9.  Pull the elastic all the way around the bottom until the ends meet.

10.  Overlap the elastic 1/2” and stitch the ends together securely.

11.  Tuck the sewn piece inside the “no sew zone” and sew the hole shut.  Now the bottom hem is done!

DIY onesie gown for newborn

12.  Serge (or zigzag) the top edge and turn it under 1/2”.

13. Sew the top edge about 1/8” from the edge.

14.  Set your machine to sew the largest/loosest stitch (basting stitch) and sew just under the first stitch.  Leave plenty of thread where you stopped.

15.  Pull your threads of the loose stitch you just made to create a gather.

16.  Work the material all the way around until you have the gather you want.

DIY Baby Gown onesie

17.  Slide the little onesie into the gathered top.

18.  Pin into place.

19.  Undo the snaps of the onesie so it slides onto the arm of your machine.

20.  Using a normal stitch {not the loose one you made earlier}, stitch all the way around the gown piece under the loose stitch.

21.  Pull the loose stitch out completely by pulling on the long threads you pulled on to create the gather in the first place.  This time however, you are going to just rip them completely out.  And now you are completely done!

Baby Onesie Tutorial by U Create

This would be a really cute gift just by itself, but throw in a matching headband or booties and you have a whole newborn ensemble.

Blinged Converse Tutorial by A Happy Circus Hi, this is Jennifer and I am so excited to be the creative guest today. I have this little blog, called A Happy Circus where I write about a mish mash of everything crafty and beautiful. From sewing to scrapbooking to cooking, if it’s light, airy, beautiful, ruffly, vintage or pink than I am happy. The circus part is trying to raise four children while doing all of the above. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. My life is definitely a happy circus.

Grab your favorite pair of chuck taylors and let’s get started!

You will need:
E 6000 (a very strong glue in a tube found at your local craft store or Walmart)
coordinating ribbon (for the shoe laces)
swaravski flat back crystals size 7ss or 9ss (4-6 bags of 144 each) (I got mine on Ebay).
toothpicks
sharp point tweezers
plate (for squeezing glue onto. If using styrofoam or paper, put a thick magazine underneath)
mini snickers unwrapped (great for popping in your mouth since you will be sitting for a while)
First, come up with your design. You can sketch it onto the shoe with a pencil, or you can freehand it like me. Spread out the crystals you will need. Make sure the room is well ventilated since the glue has toxic fumes.

Squeeze some glue onto your plate. Then grab the crystal with your tweezers. You will need to keep adding little pea size amounts of glue to the plate every two minutes as the glue starts to dry out.

With your toothpick, you can apply the glue to the back of the crystal or you can dip the back of the crystal into the glue.
Place your crystal onto the shoe. Don’t worry about the glue strands. You can pull those off with tweezers when it dries.
Pat the crystal into place with the back of tweezer or your finger. Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. If necessary take many breaks. The whole process takes a few hours. When finished let dry for 24 to 72 hours to “cure”. Then add your favorite ribbon and enjoy!

Don’t have a princess in your life? You can bling cell phones, laptops… and anything else you can dream up. Just make sure it is not an area near the mouth, you don’t want a baby ingesting the chemicals.
