Supplies used:

• 1/4 yard of designed fleece
• 1/4 yard solid color fleece
• sharp scissors
• sewing machine (or hand sew)

Instructions:

Step #1: Cut the Fleece

Cut fleece into two 6 inch x 50 inch strips.

Step #2:  Sew

Stack the scarf strips on top of each other.  Sew a straight line right down the middle of the fleece.

Step #3: Make the Fringe

Cut 1 inch strips all up and down both side of the sewn stitch.  This creates a fun fringe and it’s the kid’s favorite part of the craft.

Step #4: Shake it out

Shake the scarf to make the fringe full and ENJOY!

So today for our Throwback Tutorial I am making Baby Leg Warmers like before, but with a ruffled hem!

I found some adorable socks last week at two different places and the quality evident.  The Valentine socks are from Joann Crafts and are super soft; the St Patrick’s Day ones are from Walmart and they are super stringy inside and the top edge is a bit scratchy.  Because they are holiday socks and won’t be worn forever, I am okay with the lower quality ones, but for future reference, I would totally buy them at Joann Crafts.

First of all, I totally realize this picture looks like something out of the Wizard of Oz, but aren’t they super cute socks!

Step #1:  Cut off the feet of the socks and toss them aside.

Step #2:  Set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch.  While sewing around the edge of the socks (where you just cut off the feet) pull the fabric tight as it goes under your sewing foot.  This is what creates the lettuce hem edge.  Do the same thing to the other sock.Super cute, right?  I banged these ones out in 7 minutes…yes, I timed myself.  I should note that my kids were in school, so my distractions were minimal. Check out these fabulous St Patrick’s Day Leg Warmers…or as my daughter calls them “Arm Warmers.” by the way, they are super cute arm warmers.

I was scanning Pinterest the other day and came across this adorable Polkadot Valentine Shirt from 2013 when Erin from Hazel & Company guest posted for us.  I love the simplicity of this polkadot stamping idea and thought I would try it with my daughter and create a Polkadot Shamrock Tee.

Supply List:

3 different bottles of green acrylic/fabric paint

White cotton t-shirt

Vinyl stencil or freezer paper with shape cut out

paper plate

butcher paper

pencils with fairly new erasers or q-tips

Optional: an adorable little person

Instructions:

Step #1:  Set up

Lay butcher paper out and tape it down.  Squirt the green paint in quarter-sized circles.  Put your stencil on the front of the t-shirt…if you are using a vinyl stencil cut from a digital craft cutter, make sure it sticks really well to the shirt.  If you use the freezer paper method: cut shamrock out of freezer paper and iron the freezer paper where you want it on the shirt. IMPORTANT: slip a piece of cardboard or plastic bag inside the shirt so the paint won’t bleed to the back of the shirt. 

Step #2:  Stamping with Pencil Erasers

Use a different pencil eraser for each paint color. Dip the eraser in the paint, then stamp it on the plate one time to get excess paint off.  Now stamp the eraser randomly inside the stencil on the shirt.

Step #3:  When your stencil is full of polkadots and you are happy with the result, let it dry.  I was hoping to distract my impatient daughter by having her clean up the mess while the paint dried…ummm, nope.  She cleaned it up at super speed and ran to get the blow dryer to help the paint along.
Step #4:  Once the paint is completely dry, remove the stencil and you have a perfect polkadot shamrock t-shirt.
