DIY Quilt Block Coasters

I was walking around the craft store trying to think of something to give my mom for Mother’s Day and I saw a set of 4 wooden coasters and had this idea! First I need to tell you that my mother is an avid quilter. She’s amazing at it and has such a passion for it. Let me show you this gorgeous quilt she gave me last year…

…I’m in love with it and I will cherish it forever. Isn’t she so talented? If there was a fire I would go straight for this right after the kids! It is now a family heirloom.

Okay, back to my idea. I saw these wooden coasters and thought I should turn them into mini quilt blocks coasters for mom!

The fun part? I loved how much fun they were to make that I’m going to play with more designs! I hope mom loves them.

DIY QUILT BLOCK COASTERS

Supplies:

wooden coasters (set of 4)
acrylic paint (Testors paint found at Walmart, Jo-Ann, Hobby Lobby)
ruler
paintbrushes
Mod Podge acrylic sealer
pencil

Directions:

I started by painting my coasters white. Front and back. 2 coats. Let dry.
Now you’re ready to draw on your design. If you want designs similar to mine I sketched the patterns below for you to follow. I began by drawing one-inch squares and erased the lines I didn’t need – makes it so easy!
After you draw your design you are ready to paint!
When they’re completely dry you are ready to smooth the edges and surfaces!
Make sure to wipe off all of the sanding dust!
The last step is to seal the coasters with an acrylic sealer (you don’t want to skip this step because coasters will get wet and spilled on and you want to protect them so they last!).

I’m going to put them in a cute little box and I have a gift for mom that she is going to love!

CRAFT TIP: You can use this same technique to make wooden quilt art to display as home decor, too. I have a 12×12 piece of wood I’m going to try this on next!

DIY Mother’s Day Mason Jars

Mother’s Day is around the corner and I decided to do a “favorite things” jar for my mother and grandmother – they can also be used as a vase to display their favorite flowers! Let me show you how simple these DIY Mother’s Day mason jars are to create…

SUPPLIES:

mason jar ( I used the half gallon size)
chalk paint & paint brush (I used cheap sponge brushes)
white cardstock
painters tape (if you want striped jar)
trimmings/ribbon
hole punch
sand paper

DIRECTIONS

Paint the jars with chalk paint. Let completely dry. Cover with 2 coats. You can paint the lids/rings, too! CRAFT TIP: chalk paint is great for painting on metal, glass, porcelain – no priming needed!
Striped vase: wrap the jar in painter’s tape. I painted 2 coats of white chalk paint and 2 coats of tan.
Take sand paper and sand the words and the rim of the jars.
Fill with mom/grandma’s favorite items or flowers!
Print out Happy Mother’s Day tags (striped or solid)
Punch a hole in the tags and tie with your favorite trimmings.

You have a gift mom or grandma will LOVE!

DIY Sugar Scrub Recipes

Want to give a gift to that person who seems to have everything and it hard to shop for?!

Create a luxurious sugar scrub using their favorite scent!

Put it into a cute bottle or mason jar and you are set!

Sugar Scrub Tips

I personally LOVE extra virgin olive oil (love the vitamin E it already has!)
If you want more of an oily feel add 1/3 cup of oil instead.
If you have sensitive skin test it on an area of your arm before use.
Create a lemon version and wash your hands with it after doing dishes!

Grandma’s Garden Paper Flower Bouquet

“Growing a garden of grandchildren” is my mom’s favorite saying. She had it vinyled on a big wall with pictures of her 15 grandkids. So for Mother’s Day this year, I made her a flower bouquet of grandchildren for her desk at work. What grandmother doesn’t LOVE to show off their grandkids?

Supplies used:

White Cardstock
Flower and Banner Printable
Wooden Skewers/dowels
Circle Punch
Floral foam
Floral Moss
Bright tin (Hobby Lobby has a lot)

I create a collage of all the latest pics of my nieces and nephews in PicMonkey. We have a tutorial on how to do that here. Luckily I am kind of the family photographer so I had most of the pictures already, but another easy way is to take them from your siblings social media accounts.

DIY Mothers Day Vase

Since Mother’s Day is around the corner, and since Mother’s LOVE flowers {well, this mother does!}, I thought I would show you a simple Mother’s Day gift idea that will be a big hit!

I grabbed a watering can and milk tin I had on hand, spray painted them, pulled out my nifty Cricut, and vinyled the words “Mom” and “Grandma” in their favorite colors!

Seriously, does it get any easier than that?!
Here’s the “grandma” version…

How fun would it be to put the reasons why you love them or their favorite saying.
Yes, so many possibilities that reflect THEM.

DIY Address Planter

I found this little pallet fence and saw some wooden numbers and this li’l DIY Address Planter idea came into my head. I needed something to freshen up my front porch and I’m so excited with how it turned out!

SUPPLIES:

pallet fence or thin pallet (found mine at Michaels in the wood area)
numbers (you could use wood or metal)
small box
paint (or stain would look great, too!)
brushes
wood glue (staple or nail gun if you want a more secure hold for the box)
ruler

DIRECTIONS:

Paint your fence and your letters. I did two coats to get it nice and covered.

Let dry completely.

Next, grab your ruler and align those numbers before glueing them on!

Glue on the letters and the box with wood glue.

I ended up putting a couple of screws in the back of the box to make sure it was really secure.

When the planter is completely dry you can plant!

I chose to plant succulents because I love the look of them and they are hard to kill, but the fun part is you can plant whatever you’d like!

Hang and display!

I used these metal hooks…

…and secured them with my glue gun!

I love the result!

All About Mom Bunting Tutorial

She’s sharing a beautiful and thoughtful Mother’s Day Craft to celebrate mom!

Hi everyone! My name’s Rebecca and I’m so excited to be here with ya’ll at U Create today!

I have a little blog called Simple as That where I enjoy sharing my love of photography and crafting. If you have a chance sometime, I’d love for you to pop in and say hi!

Today I’m going to share a simple Mother’s Day project that you can do with the kids. It uses a simple list of supplies and not only involves crafting together, but also getting to know mom or Grandma a little bit better and what could be more fun than that!?

Keep reading to find out how to create an

ALL ABOUT MOM BUNTING

As the name of this bunting suggests, it’s all about mom and once put together it will tell a story about who mom {or Grandma} is and what things they love, don’t love and other significant details about who they are.

We created this bunting for my mom {my kids Grandma} but I think it would be just as fun to sit down together and create this banner about YOU as a great get to know you activity and to tell your kids some things about yourself that they might not have known before.

To start this project you’ll first need to gather a few supplies. Some string to hang your bunting, scraps of paper, photos, paper doilies, adhesive, a stapler, a hole punch, stickers and miscellaneous ephemera that tell about mom. I emailed my mom with a few simple questions to gather some more info about her to create our bunting.

Some things you could include in your bunting:

1. Mom’s favorite color.

2. Her favorite flower.

3. A wrapper from a favourite treat.

4. Printed clipart illustrating a favorite hobby.

5. Scan and print the book jacket from a favourite book.

6. A handwritten note to mom.

7. Photos of mom.

8. Mom’s initials.

Get creative with the things you use, this project isn’t meant to be matchy-matchy, it’s just a fun way to celebrate mom and all the things that make her special and unique.

Once you’ve gathered all your supplies and some info about mom its time to start putting your bunting together. You can create some simple shapes {flags, rectangles} to attach smaller ephemera to and then attach them to your string. Fold some doilies over and staple to your string. My kids enjoyed gluing things, looking at the photos we’d gathered and then stringing the pieces together.

Once you have everything strung, hang it somewhere for everyone to see and that’s it. I told you it was simple, but it’s also a really meaningful craft to do with the kids as Mother’s Day approaches.

DIY Wooden Block Frame Tutorial

This simple craft project is the perfect gift for that somebody who “has it all” and makes a beautiful addition to any home decor! Let’s get started with these supplies:

SUPPLIES:

favorite photo
wooden block the size of your photo (4×6 size used in this tutorial)
foam brush
wooden candle stick holders and wooden decorative tops
acrylic or spray paint in your favorite color
wood glue

DIRECTIONS:

Paint all sides and the back of your wooden block and wooden embellishments. Let completely dry.
Glue on wooden embellishments with wood glue. Let completely dry.
Adhere your photo on with mod podge. Sand the edges for a rustic look!
End with tying a bow with ribbon or lace!

GIFT IDEAS:

give to a newlywed couple using the wedding photo on the front and invitation on the back.
teens can easily make these and display them in their rooms or give to a friend
Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, baby announcement keepsake, you name it!

Free Printable Mother’s Day Cards

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and I came up with these two free printable cards to add to any gift for mom!

The first one is “i love you more than…”. I always tell my kids I love them more than pickles, chocolate, and even Diet Coke! They come back with silly things like the moon, Disneyland, etc.

Print out this card and fill it with funny random things inside!

The next one is the “MOM” card. Telling her she’s SMART, LOVING, and all MINE.
