DIY Chalk art U-createcrafts.comLast month I was asked if I could help make some really cool chalkboard art for my cousin’s wedding.  I had never done anything like that before, but figured it couldn’t be too hard to draw art on chalkboard…I mean, I do it on paper all the time.  WRONG!  It was tougher than I thought to just sit down and free-hand some cutesy wedding saying.  So I took to my computer and created a graphic that I could somehow copy on the chalkboard.  It totally worked. Here’s the tutorial to DIY Chalk Art!
1 How to make chalk artSupplies Needed:

  • Chalkboard (these easel ones are at Hobby Lobby)
  • Designed Printable —>Love Anchors the Soul
  • Charcoal/Granite Pencil
  • Sharp Pencil
  • Chalk
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Q-tips to fix tiny mistakes

2 make a wedding centerpieceStep #1:  “Season” the chalkboard.

First you have to season the chalkboard (if you’d like to use it again).  If you don’t season it, then the first thing you write upon it will be there forever in the background.   To season the board, lay a piece of chalk sideways and rub it all over the board.  Then take a paper towel and wipe it off really good.

3 transfer image to chalkboardStep #2:  Scribble on the back of the printable.

Using the charcoal stick or just a granite pencil, scribble all over the words showing through the back of the printable…the darker the better.

4 charcol stick and chalk artStep #3: Transfer the printable image to the chalkboard.

Carefully lay the printable charcoal side down.  Once you have it where you want it, use the sharp pencil and trace around the words.  You can make the image transfer as detailed or plain as you want.
5 chalk art tutorialLift the paper off the chalkboard and using the Q-tip and water fix any mistakes.
6 sharpen chalk with pencil sharpenerStep #4: Sharpen the chalk.

The sharper the chalk the more clear your lines will be.  I had to sharpen my chalk about 4 times during the entire tracing process.

7 trace over the pencil imageStep #5: Trace on top of the transferred image/words.

With your sharp chalk and starting at the top, trace on top of the charcoal letters.  At first I thought this would make the chalk look gray, but it didn’t really change much.
DIY Chalkart at U-createcraftsStep #6:  Clean up chalky mistakes with Q-tip & water.

Here are some tips and tricks I learned from making 4 of these pretty chalkboard centerpieces:

  • The chalk will come off with the slightest touch. If you want the chalk to stay on better, use the American Crafts Permanent Chalk Marker.  Seriously, it’s the only chalk marker that actually stays white…some of the other brands I used turned yellow.
  • If you don’t want the chalk permanent, I suggest dipping the tip of the chalk in a little water.  This makes the chalk look darker and last longer.  It won’t come off as easily.
  • DO NOT use hairspray as a finishing spray to secure the chalk.  You’ll notice the picture below looks a bit different from the finished picture above…that’s because I tried the hairspray technique and the entire chalkboard was dripping wet and the art was gone.  Super sad face, right?  At that point the only thing you can do is snap a picture and send it to your sister with #craftfail.

Wedding ChalkArt TutorialDespite the craft fails (and there were many), I finally figured out the best way to make chalkboard art!  I made 4 more chalkboard easels and some tiny little chalkboard food labels.
Love is in the airIf you make some fun chalkboard art using this tutorial, we would love to see it.  Post a picture on our Facebook page or tag us on instagram (@ucreateblog)…we love to see what you create!

The sunburst tablecloth tutorial is an easy way to dress up a dessert table. It comes together really fast and makes a big impact. You can use this same gathering concept for any party tablecloth, too!

SUPPLIES:

  • 1 Yellow and 1 White plastic tablecloths
  • 2-4 Sunbursts using this tutorial
  • White or Yellow DMC floss
  • Sewing Needle

sunshine tablecloth

Step 1

Place both tablecloths on the table and using 3 strands of DMC floss start sewing a  1” running stitch where you would like to gather the tablecloth.

sunshine-252520tablecloth-252520tutorial_thumb-25255B2-25255D

Step 2

When you have sewn to the height you like, pull both ends of the floss and tie a knot. This will give the tablecloth the “gathered” look.  Repeat everywhere on the tablecloth that you want that look.

Step 3

Simply tape on the sunbursts, at the gathered points.

Sunshine Birthday Party with printables at U Create Hang these fun sunburst pom poms for a party – they made the perfect backdrop for the dessert table!

SUPPLIES:

  • Yellow poster board
  • Yellow tissue paper
  • Tape
  • Bakers twine

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut out a sun on the yellow poster board or use your digital cutting machine large enough for a pom pom to fit in the center.

How to Make a Tisse Paper Pom Pom

2. Trim 5 pieces of tissue paper the same diameter as the center of your sun. I was able to cut two pom poms out of one section of tissue paper.

3. Fold all 5 pieces of tissue paper 1” with accordion folds. Then cut (rounding off) each end with the paper still folded together.

4. In the middle of the paper, add a twist tie as tight as possible.

5. Carefully pull one tissue paper at a time, to fluff out the pom pom.

How to Make a Sun Pom Pom

6. Tape the pom pom to the middle of the sun. Punch a hole in one sun ray. Tie bakers twine or string to the sun and then hang your Sunburst Pom Poms!

Learn how to dye gorgeous doilies and turn them into 3D party decor by Lisa Storms
Hi, I’m Lisa Storms and I’m excited to be a guest at Ucreate today!
I have a crafting blog called … wait for it … Lisa Storms [lisastorms.typepad.com].  Pretty creative, right?  It’s a mix of crafting from parties, kids crafts, holidays, scrapbooking, cards, home decor, school lunches, sewing, to anything else I can make happier with some glue and a sequin or two. Or fifty.  I like to keep it happy and simple, and I love a good pun or anything ridiculously cheesy.
I love parties.  I love color and texture.  And I really love things hanging at parties with color and texture.  I’ve been making 3D doily balls forever but recently thought I’d try making them in different colors.  So today I wanted to share a tutorial on making these versatile decorations.  And best of all you can use them again and again as they easily store flat.
doilies_hanging
I purchased paper doilies (Wilton) at the craft store in three different sizes.  I figured eight doilies per ball minimum.  To dye them, I used food coloring I had on hand … a set called Neon (McCormick) which includes purple, green, pink and blue.  Add a thin layer of water to the bottom of a flat dish big enough to fit your largest doily.  Add several squirts of food coloring to the water and mix.  It will be much darker than the final dyed color.  Drop in a doily (you can do more than one at a time with the smaller ones if you work quickly).  You’ll want to wear a pair of gloves to avoid very scary looking fingers.
doilies_dye
Leave it in for only 10 seconds and carefully remove onto paper towels.  Cover with another paper towel and press to remove excess water and lay flat on a clean paper towel to dry.  They dry pretty quickly.  Just make sure they are flat before they dry.
Once I dyed a set of eight, I added more dye to the same dish to intensify the color to dye a different sized set of eight.  And again for another set before changing out fresh water for a new color.
doilies_dried
Once dry, fold each doily in half and glue back sides together in a stack with a glue stick.  Glue the front and back flaps together to form a 3D circle.  Fan out each flap evenly and tie on a string or thread to hang using the holes in the doily (or punch your own hole if you need something bigger).  I used transparent nylon (Coats & Clark) so the balls would appear to be “floating”.
doilies_fold
And that’s about it.  Hang them up to enjoy and then collapse them flat to store for future use.  They are easy, inexpensive, and most importantly happy =).
doilies_hanging
Thanks for letting me play here today, and be sure to stop by my blog [lisastorms.typepad.com] for more of my ramblings and excessive use of smilies =).
