Backyard Olympic Games by U Create

Naturally the best part of planning and creating a fun Kids Olympic Party is all about the games.  We have plenty of tiny kids in our family so we didn’t want to make too advanced games, but we still wanted it to be fun for the few older kids we did have.  So Kari, Danielle, and I put our heads together and came up with these amazing

 Backyard Olympic Games

As to how to make the Olympic Games, these are really self explanatory so I included just a sentence or two on how I made them and how we played them.

Balance Beam

Balance Beam and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

2 Cinder Blocks

1 2×4 plank of wood

Just put the blocks down and place the wood on top.

Olympic Games Balance Beam

Kids younger than 5 years walked across and back…adding an optional trick if they wanted.

The older bunch had to walk to the middle turn around on one foot and walk back again.  This was hysterical to watch.

Noodle Throw

Noodle Throw and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

Hula Hoop Rings made previously

4 pool noodles purchased at the dollar store

Secure the Giant Olympic Rings so they stand in the grass…we used bamboo shoots.

Noodle Throw and other Olympic Games

Two players each have 2 noodles.  They throw the noodles like javelins and try to make it throw the hoop.  Having two players at once is pretty fun because their noodles knock against each other and it’s unpredictable.

Designate a spot for older players father back the game more challenging.

You can give the hoops point values too, but since our littles are younger we were just hoping they would make it in a hoop.

Monster Ball Toss

Monster Ball Toss and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

Foam Board

Super sharp x-acto knife

Markers

Draw your funky monster.  Cut out the mouth, the nose, the eye…whatever you’d like. Just make a hole for the kidlets to throw a ball or bean bag through.

This was our 3 and younger game so we made the hole pretty big.

Water Bucket Relay

Water Bucket Relay and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

6 buckets from the dollar store; 3 of one color and 3 of another.

2 big car wash sponges

water…lots of water

Place three buckets in a line about 3 feet apart.  Do this with the other set of buckets, lining them up next to the other teams buckets.  Fill the buckets with water.

Water Bucket Relay Game

A child stands behind each bucket.  The first one has the huge sponge soaked with water and hands it over their head to the player behind them.  The next player is not directly behind them so this requires the kids to kind of toss the sponge over their head.

The next player dips the sponge in the bucket and throws it to the next person, etc.  Then we had the kids turn around and through it back, but this time like a quarterback…through their legs.  It was super fun!!

We even made the adults play this one. Needless to say, everyone ended up wet.

Olympic GamesOlympic Games

As you can see we had a great time!  This games were a HUGE hit for both young and old. We had a great time!

I have a ton of fabric scraps!  In fact, I have so many that I  sometimes don’t keep the smaller ones (gasp).  I have been doing a lot of Scrap Busters lately and even did a round up of my favorite ones.  Here is a fabric scraps memory game I shared over at Skip to my Lou on November 14th.  It’s a huge hit and I know you’ll love it.
Fabric Scraps Memory GameMy 7 year old daughter LOVES those cardboard memory matching games…you know the ones! They’re often found at the dollar store and the cardboard pieces won’t lay flat or a younger sibling/pet has found one or two and now there are teeth marks. Well, in an attempt to solve all of life’s problems…just kidding, I am just trying to make a fun game for my daughter by using up my fabric scraps.  I had to add a little drama though, right?

3x3 fabric squares for memory game

Supply list:

  • 3″ x 3″ fabric scraps (make sure you have a set of each pattern)
  • 3″ x 3″ solid color squares for the backing
  • 3″ x 3″ flannel or felt for the inside
  • pinking shears

DIY Matching game

Step #1:  Assemble the squares

Assemble each square set: print-flannel-backing. This is a good time to make sure you have a match of each print.  I assembled all the squares before I did any sewing.

Step #2: Start sewing

Start sewing in one corner, go all the way around the square using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Create kids matching game

Step #3: Grab the pinking shears.

Using the pinking shears, cut all the way around the square.  This not only adds a cute zig-zag look, but ensures the fabric won’t fray.Match Game Sewing tutorial

Step #4: Put the squares in a cute bag or box…or make one.

We keep our game in a little pouch or wristlet that my daughter found at the mall.  But you could easily make a fun envelope or clutch for this cute little game. This memory game is a great handmade gift for any little one.

Children's Matching Game

I am so glad to be able to share this tutorial with you today.  Remember if you make this craft be sure to share it on our Facebook page or tag us on Instagram @ucreateblog.

Travel Letter Game Tutorial by Always Expect Moore

I’m so excited to share this project with you today! I’m Carolina from Always Expect Moore, where I craft, sew, and create… between trying to run a household of boys.

My oldest just turned 4, and is starting preschool. He knows his colors, his shapes, and his numbers, but is having trouble with his letters. To help out, I created this travel letter game so that wherever we are I can whip out the letters and work with him on them.

The awesome folks at EKSuccess gave me these fun EKSuccess tools to play with, and I put them to good use!

I used a tin of mints, some round wooden circles I had already painted, and some heavyweight scrapbook paper.

The tin was just over 2″ wide, so I used the ruler and blade to cut two strips just under 2″ wide.I scored one strip at 1/4″ intervals and the other at 1/8″ intervals and then folded them accordion style.

I udsed the adhesive runner on the inside to adhere my paper.

The 1/4″ fold went on the bottom, the 1/8″ on the top. These will act as a cushion so that the pieces don’t bang around in the box. My purse is noisy enough without the extra clanging!

From the scrap paper, I used the scallop punch to cut sets of circles.

I put an uppercase and lowercase letter on each set with the silver pen.

I put the scallop punched circles upside down, then used the tape runner all the way across the edges would stick down.

The sets were adhered to one side of the wooden circles.

Using regular paper, I made a rubbing of the logo, and then traced the rubbing with a ballpoint pen, on top of a piece of my heavyweight construction paper. I then used the fine tipped craft knife to cut out this shape.

I used the gold pen to color over the red part of the tin, and the silver pen to write on my label, then adhered my label with the adhesive.

I can fit 6 sets of letters in the tin at a time, allowing me to mix up the game, but not make it overly complicated with too many letters at once. Perfect for my preschooler.

We can play matching games, write words, pick a letter and find objects that start with that letter… there is an unlimited number of ways we can use our letter tin.

How would you use this with the little one in your life?

There are lots of other fun ways to use these tools… check out all these projects!
