Backyard Olympic Games by U Create

Naturally the best part of planning and creating a fun Kids Olympic Party is all about the games.  We have plenty of tiny kids in our family so we didn’t want to make too advanced games, but we still wanted it to be fun for the few older kids we did have.  So Kari, Danielle, and I put our heads together and came up with these amazing

 Backyard Olympic Games

As to how to make the Olympic Games, these are really self explanatory so I included just a sentence or two on how I made them and how we played them.

Balance Beam

Balance Beam and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

2 Cinder Blocks

1 2×4 plank of wood

Just put the blocks down and place the wood on top.

Olympic Games Balance Beam

Kids younger than 5 years walked across and back…adding an optional trick if they wanted.

The older bunch had to walk to the middle turn around on one foot and walk back again.  This was hysterical to watch.

Noodle Throw

Noodle Throw and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

Hula Hoop Rings made previously

4 pool noodles purchased at the dollar store

Secure the Giant Olympic Rings so they stand in the grass…we used bamboo shoots.

Noodle Throw and other Olympic Games

Two players each have 2 noodles.  They throw the noodles like javelins and try to make it throw the hoop.  Having two players at once is pretty fun because their noodles knock against each other and it’s unpredictable.

Designate a spot for older players father back the game more challenging.

You can give the hoops point values too, but since our littles are younger we were just hoping they would make it in a hoop.

Monster Ball Toss

Monster Ball Toss and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

Foam Board

Super sharp x-acto knife

Markers

Draw your funky monster.  Cut out the mouth, the nose, the eye…whatever you’d like. Just make a hole for the kidlets to throw a ball or bean bag through.

This was our 3 and younger game so we made the hole pretty big.

Water Bucket Relay

Water Bucket Relay and other Olympic Games

Supply List & Instructions:

6 buckets from the dollar store; 3 of one color and 3 of another.

2 big car wash sponges

water…lots of water

Place three buckets in a line about 3 feet apart.  Do this with the other set of buckets, lining them up next to the other teams buckets.  Fill the buckets with water.

Water Bucket Relay Game

A child stands behind each bucket.  The first one has the huge sponge soaked with water and hands it over their head to the player behind them.  The next player is not directly behind them so this requires the kids to kind of toss the sponge over their head.

The next player dips the sponge in the bucket and throws it to the next person, etc.  Then we had the kids turn around and through it back, but this time like a quarterback…through their legs.  It was super fun!!

We even made the adults play this one. Needless to say, everyone ended up wet.

Olympic GamesOlympic Games

As you can see we had a great time!  This games were a HUGE hit for both young and old. We had a great time!

The sunburst tablecloth tutorial is an easy way to dress up a dessert table. It comes together really fast and makes a big impact. You can use this same gathering concept for any party tablecloth, too!

SUPPLIES:

  • 1 Yellow and 1 White plastic tablecloths
  • 2-4 Sunbursts using this tutorial
  • White or Yellow DMC floss
  • Sewing Needle

sunshine tablecloth

Step 1

Place both tablecloths on the table and using 3 strands of DMC floss start sewing a  1” running stitch where you would like to gather the tablecloth.

sunshine-252520tablecloth-252520tutorial_thumb-25255B2-25255D

Step 2

When you have sewn to the height you like, pull both ends of the floss and tie a knot. This will give the tablecloth the “gathered” look.  Repeat everywhere on the tablecloth that you want that look.

Step 3

Simply tape on the sunbursts, at the gathered points.

Step 4

Stand back and admire the gorgeous tablecloth!

I’m Ashlee and I blog over at Ashlee Marie Cakes ~ I’m a bit of an ADD blogger, a little bit of EVERYTHING! Cakes, parties, recipes, crafts, including knitting and crocheting patterns, home DIY and even personal posts on being a mother to 5 children on the autistic spectrum! Phew… That sounds like a lot, but it’s not every category every week- I’m busy but not insane (well maybe a little…)

lego-head-cake-tutorial-finished

I shared my Rapunzel cake tutorial last year here at U Create and I’m so excited to be back sharing another cake tutorial with you! I made this same cake for my son’s 8th birthday last year and I get emails every week asking for instructions on how to make it! It’s a pretty easy cake, with a great impact and you can personalize it with any Lego face, or facial expression you want! So let’s get started!

lego-head-cake-tutorial-cutting-cardboard-circles

Cake circles! This is where it all begins… kind of boring, but an important preparation. My head was a 6 inch cake so I took a 6 inch cake circle and cut it down by an inch all around creating a 4 inch circle. I cut FIVE of these circles.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-stacked-cardboard-circles
Then I took off another half inch around and cut THREE 3 inch circles! Here I have the three stack of 3 inch on the left, and FOUR of the 4 inch stack on the right (one of the 4 inch circles is for later, so don’t lose it!)

lego-head-cake-tutorial-stacked-boards-foil

Cover them with foil (I have a video tutorial for covering cake boards if you aren’t sure how to do this)
lego-head-cake-tutorial-covering-boards-fondant
And now roll out your yellow fondant and cover your cake board! I buy my fondant pre-colored when I want a nice BRIGHT color. For more muted and pastel colors I color it myself. Here are some tips and tricks with preparing the fondant. Roll it out to just under 1/4 inch thick. Cover your foil covered cake board with something sticky, either piping gel, or even light corn syrup works well! Mold it around the boards and cut along the bottom.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-top-bottom-boards
Cover both, keeping the bottom edge as smooth as you can, after I cut my bottom edge I lift it up and take my finger and smooth it underneath all the way around.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-letter-cut-outs
Now for the logo on top. You have two options- If you want to go the quick and easy route (and more expensive) you can buy a fondant alphabet set and cut out the letters, they are the right size…
lego-head-cake-tutorial-marking-logo
BUT I like taking a bit of extra time (and less expense) and making the lettering as close to the correct logo/font as I can! I downloaded this Legothick font and printed off a few different sizes and picked the size I felt fit the 3 inch circle the best. I rolled out my fondant again, closer to 1/8 inch, and placed my printed paper on top. Taking a straight pin I pushed the pin through the paper into the fondant along the lines.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-logo-cutting
You’ll leave an impression in the fondant you can use for cutting out. This will take patience, the fondant is soft and easily messed up, so just be patient!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-fondant-logo-cutting
I tried a few different tools to cut this out as smoothly as I could. All sorts of expensive fondant tools I won and everything (don’t use a knife it will cut your mat) and I ended up with the straight pin again! I just slowly carved the excess fondant away (but not TOO slow, like don’t leave the fondant on the counter and take a break, it will dry out)
lego-head-cake-tutorial-logo-drying
I placed the cut out letters back onto my printed paper, to let them dry a bit in the right formation/angle! Pretty darn perfect!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-logo-top
Once they dry a bit use some clear vanilla or even some of the piping gel to stick it onto the fondant top (the 3 inch circle, NOT the 4 inch circles)

lego-head-cake-tutorial-carving

Now for the cakes! I used two 6 inch cakes, each about 3 inches tall. Using a serrated knife prepare the cake for carving by cutting off the top crusty part so your working with a clean surface/blank slate. Now we’re going to created the rounded corners. I took the same serrated knife and cut off the corner at about a 45 degree angle, all the way around leaving a nice 4 inch flat circle for the base to sit on.

lego-head-cake-tutorial-carve-bottom

Next, cleaning your knife often, carve the smallest bit from the corner edges to round it just a bit, and soften the edges a bit.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-frosting-base
Since this is the bottom its going to be hard to frost once it’s right side up so I actually frosted the rounded bottom edge, then placed that one last 4 inch circled (covered with foil) on the bottom! I like to use ganache, it seals in the moisture and has an amazing rich flavor. Since it dries quite dense you don’t have to worry about it squishing out when you put the fondant on it. Let the ganache cool down and to create a thicker frosting I like to whip it up in my bosch.

lego-head-cake-tutorial-carving-top

Flip it over, fill it with more ganache and place the next prepared layer on top. Now we’re going to repeat the carving to create the rounded corner again.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-carved-frosting-whipped-ganache
Once your done with the carving frost the rest of the cake, make sure to fill in around the seam well!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-ganache-frosting
Then let it dry, it will become more matte and lose the high gloss when it’s ready to go!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-covering-fondant
Time to cover it with fondant!!! Roll out the fondant into a circle 1/4 inch thick. Since our cake is 6 inches around and about 6 inches tall you want close to an 18 inch circle. I like to fold my mat in half (fondant out) and lay the center directly onto the center of the to of the cake, then peel off the fondant and let it start to hang down the sides.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-smoothing-fondant
With our fondant so thick it’s also very heavy so we want to work as quickly as you can, but don’t panic, you don’t have to work at warp speed! I start by using a fondant smoother (if it sticks to your fondant use a bit of powdered sugar to keep things dry and sliding easily) to make sure the top if flat, with no air bubbles.
lego-head-cake-tutorial-shaping-fondant
Now we’re going to work our way down. With your fondant thick it will press together without wrinkles as well as stretch a bit without ripping to help mold the fondant into shape. Don’t just work one side at a time, work a bit of one side, rotate, work more, rotate, work more, rotate, etc.. work your way down and around as evenly as possible. When you get it smooth down the sides take a sharp knife and cut along the bottom so the excess weight is gone and now we can work on smoothing it underneath!
 lego-head-cake-tutorial-smoothing-fondant
There are a FEW creases here and there, but overall it smoothed together really well. As you work your way around the ganache will warm up a bit and help adhere to the fondant and hold it into place. Keep a warm wet rag next to you because as you smooth the fondant into place you will get some ganache on you hand, keep your hands clean otherwise you’ll end up with a chocolate streak on your fondant (which if you do you either 1- get your finger wet and wipe it off, the water will change the look of the fondant a bit, becoming glossy and sticky in the one spot, but it will dry, or 2- make it the back of the cake!)
lego-head-cake-tutorial-fondant-covered
Now I used my plastic fondant smoother and just smooth out any bumps, imperfections, etc.. the ganache underneath warms and softens when rubbed and will just smooth right out! I LOVE working with ganache under fondant!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-assembling
Now for assembling the cake and adding our final details! Place the cake onto your 4 inch tall fondant covered base! I stuck the two together with a bit of the ganache (it’s great super glue, but don’t use too much, you don’t want it squishing out!)
lego-head-cake-tutorial-attaching-top
Add your top the same way, a bit of ganache dabbed on the bottom of the 3 inch wide top piece!
lego-head-cake-tutorial-top-placement
BEFORE you add the top pick the FRONT of your piece, make sure the lettering is facing the right way! You don’t want your LEGO logo crooked, and you definitely want your face on the prettiest side of the cake!
 lego-head-cake-tutorial-assembled
Voila!!! Now is the time to take a break if you want, let your hands relax, you don’t want to cramp up or shake as you draw the face on! Use this time to google Lego head images if you don’t already have one in mind! Draw it out on paper for practice. Then using a black edible marker draw it right onto your cake!!! Start with thin lines- You can always add to the thickness of your lines, but once on your cake you can’t take it away!
 lego-head-cake-tutorial-facial-expression
Now it’s time to serve and enjoy! Don’t forget to take the top cardboard off before cutting, and remember white it’s only 6 inches it’s TALLLLLL so small servings work just fine. This cake is made from 8 cups of batter- that’s 2 boxes of cake mixes so a little goes a long way!

princess cake tutorial by I'm Topsy Turvy
Hello U-Create Party readers!
My name is Ashlee and I’m here to share a tutorial for how to make your own Princess Barbie cake!

Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial finished

Here is the Rapunzel cake I made last week for a birthday party. The techniques I’m going to show you can work for any of the princesses or other women doll cakes you’d like to make yourself.
birthday cakes princess tiana

I used these same techniques to make this Princess Tiana Barbie Doll cake too!
Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial

The main supplies are the princess doll you want to make, and Wilton Wonder Mold cake pan. This cake takes a while to cook because it’s so thick. Make sure you use the metal tube down the center for even cooking. If you leave it out the cake will fall. Not pretty. I’ve had this pan for years, But somehow in the last few month I lost a key piece, the screw on the bottom. I emailed Wilton and they immediately sent on to me! It was terrific service!
Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial preparation

First we need to do the prep work. We need to cover some cake boards. We need one cake board the same size as the the cake itself. Then we also need 2 or 3 cake boards stacked together for the decorative board. Don’t use just one, it will be too thin and too weak. I’d make these 2-4 inches larger than the base of the cake, depending on how much of the cake base you want showing. You don’t want to put the cake directly on cardboard, it will get soaked. So I cover it with foil! Wrap it around the back, trim and then tape it down.
Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial covered cake board

Let’s start with the decorative cake base. You want to start by covering it with fondant. In order to get it to stick and STAY on the foil covered board I use corn syrup. I rub in all over the board before I cover it! You can leave it like that OR you can make it decorative like I did. I used an Imprint mat, put it on the board and rolled the rolling pin over it! Peel it off and you have a detailed bake base!

Take the cake sized cake board and cover it with some frosting so that the cake will stick to the board. And put the cake on the board! And frost the cake! I totally forgot to take a picture of that part! I always forget one picture in every tutorial it seems!

For any of the Barbie cakes what we need to start with is start at the inside/bottom and work your way out/up! So the underskirt is where we’re starting.

Rapunzel’s underskirt has a lot of detailing in it so I decided to roll the fondant out onto an impression mat and then used that to cover the cake! As you cover a cake the fondant tends to stretch a bit so to keep the details I just focused on keeping one section pretty, the rest I didn’t mind if the impression got stretched and warped.

I covered the pretty section with some luster dust and then to bring out the detail I painted the lines with a paint brush and clear vanilla! (notice I rolled up her 16 inch long hair and using a twist tie kept it out of her face, and out of the way while I worked on the dress!)
Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial legs

Now we need to add the doll and start working our way up! Usually I rip the legs off. But this was a higher quality doll and the legs couldn’t be pulled off without ruining them for the future. SO I decided to leave the legs on. I wrapped them with plastic wrap. The bad part about leaving the legs on is that when you push the legs in it kind of disrupts the cake a bit. Do it when the fondant is fresh so it has a bit of a stretch to it. I waited too long and it cracked the fondant. I had to do some repair work…

Back to the design, next on the out/up is the outer skirt. It’s the same purple, but it’s more simple. So I rolled it out and wrapped it around the base. Before I started wrapping I made sure to add clear vanilla to the base fondant so that the outer skirt would stick! Cutting it at the bottom and straight edges in the front. Don’t worry about the rough edges, we’ll cover them later.
Princess Rapunzel barbie birthday cake tutorial sleeves

Next up? The sleeves. Her dress has sheer sleeves. Since I can’t get completely sheer I did roll it out as thin as I could, see… You can see the writing through the fondant. Cut it down to strips, about the width of the arm. Paint it with clear vanilla and carefully wrap it around her arms. Trim the edges under the arm!

Now for the bodice. Paint her body with clear vanilla. I should mention why we’re using clear vanilla, or vanilla at all! Vanilla is mostly alchol and so it dampens the fondant and makes it sticky, but it also evaporates quickly so it dries quickly too! If you use regular vanilla the brown could dye or show up if you get it on any of the fondant that shows!. The clear vanilla won’t leave any marks!

Now using a sharp knife trim the bodice into shape! Remember you can do any princess you want, so use the colors and bodice shape of the princess your trying to make.

Her puffy sleeves. I started with 2 fondant balls to make sure they are equal and match. Then I started shaping them! Add the vanilla and add it to our princess! Now we have the base design complete. You could leave it here for a decent cake, but to take it over the top it’s time to start working on the details. That’s what really makes the cake.

Cover the seam where the bodice and skirt meet… And now time to add the criss crossing of the ribbon onto the bodice. I rolled out the pink really thin, and then using a pizza cutter cut it really narrow. This way I didn’t have to try to roll it evenly into such a small snake! I painted the bodice with clear vanilla (see, you can’t even see it!). Now one strip at a time start cutting and building the criss crossing!

And for the final details: I added a bit of white around the neckline, added some purple between the puffy sleeves and “sheer” sleeves, some detail at the ends of the sleeves, the edges of the outer skirt, the base of the dress AND the bow at the top of the criss cross lace up front!

Her skirt is all shiny, so using a brush (not one you EVER use with paint or make up or anything, JUST for food!!! Anyway, use the brush and edible glitter, or luster dust! I brushed it all over the skirt, bodice, etc… It adds that final shine/glow to the dress.

Undo her hair, add her tiny gecko and paint brush and Presto! She’s done and gorgeous!

And she’s done!
