Hi U-Create fans and friends! We are Mallory & Savannah from the DIY/Home Decor blog, Classy Clutter. Thanks for having us today! We are so excited to share with you this super easy and super cute DIY Baker’s Gift Idea. These bamboo utensils came from my local grocery store for about $2.99 + a box of $2 cake mix. We used paints and embellishments we had on hand to create this cute gift for under $5! Let’s get crafting!

Supplies:

  • 2 Bamboo Serving Utensils (similar here)
  • Acrylic Craft Paint
  • Sponge paint brush
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Hole punch (not pictured)
  • Box of cake, brownie or cookie mix
  • Gift Wrap, Trims or other embellishments

DIY Serving Utensils and Baker's Gift (supplies)

Instructions:

First, use your painter’s tape to tape a straight line about 3/4 of the way up on the handle of your serving utensils. Use your craft paint (We used cream on this step.) and paint below the tape line. Allow to dry thoroughly.

DIY Serving Utensils and Baker's Gift (Step 1)

Use a hole punch to create a confetti, polka dot look on the painter’s tape. This creates a stencil to paint your dots. Apply your painter’s tape stencil firmly to your painted utensil.

DIY Serving Utensils and Baker's Gift (Step 2)

Using another color of craft paint (we used gold!) and paint over the stencil with an up and down dabbing motion as to prevent bleeding. When your paint is mostly dry, remove the tape stencil to reveal your cute polka dots!

DIY Serving Utensils and Baker's Gift Idea

Using some fun trims, gift wrap, fabric, etc. embellish your box of cake mix and tie the utensils to the box.

DIY Serving Utensils and Baker's $5 Gift Idea

This makes the perfect hostess gift for your next Christmas party or Christmas Dinner! You could change out your embellishments for birthdays, showers, etc.

I love to see all of those cute little bug pictures at Christmas with a tree on top of the perfect little car, so I thought I would make a pattern up to share.

To make:

1-Print and cut out pattern

2-Iron Wonder Under to the back of your fabric.

3-Using scissors, cut out each piece of fabric according to pattern

4-Iron the design on the towel working from bottom layer up

5-Sew a stitch along the car and each of the pieces you ironed down

6-If you want to add a coordinating ribbon/trim, simply sew it with a straight stitch on to the towel

7-You are done! Give as a gift or place on your oven handle and smile each time you come into the kitchen!

Magnetic Spice Board Tutorial by U Create

I LOVE being able to see which spices I have and how easy they are to find – no more digging deep in my old spice cabinet knocking things over!

Here’s a mini-tutorial…

How to Make a Magnet Spice Board by U Create

1. I purchased this ready-made magnet board at a craft store called Roberts in my area.

2. I painted the frame red with acrylic paint using a sponge brush (not sure the paint color – this was years ago)

3. I embellished it with metal decor I found at a boutique – you could also purchase the wooden versions at Home Depot.

4. I used white vinyl and my Cricut machine to cut out my spices. The area you have to work with is only 3” by 3” so make sure you make your letters are small enough to fit.

5. Fill up with spices and you are ready to go!!

Magnet-spice-shaker

I bought my spice holders at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I love these because the seal is super tight – the last thing I need is spices spilling all over!

The magnet is very strong, too!! I never have to worry about the containers falling off!

magnet-spice-holders

You could do a smaller version or a larger version, too – depending on how many spices you off!

Tea Towel Tutorial by Leigh Laurel Studios

Hi! I’m Karin and I blog over at Leigh Laurel Studios. I create patterns and tutorials for sewing, embroidery, home & garden projects and crafts with kids. Balancing creativity with chasing two small children around is a common theme! If you pop by, please feel free to leave a comment or ask a question; I do my best to respond to everyone.

I’m thrilled to be sharing this project with you on U Create. Making this tea towel is fun and combines two crafts I love — hand printing and embroidery.

For the hand printing you will need:

-Tea towel (the one pictured is a 28 x 29″ flour sack towel from The Vermont Country Store)
-1 – 2″ square block to print the squares — I used the back of a letterpress stamp that is 1 3/4″ square
-Fabric paint — I added a bit of white to the bright yellow to soften it a little
-Foam paintbrush
-Masking tape or painter’s tape (I used Frog Tape; it’s easier to keep wide tape straight)
-Ruler

For the embroidery you will need:

-This downloadable pdf of the cherries
-Disappearing ink marker or fine tip permanent marker
-Red and green embroidery floss — I used DMC #s 498 and 3818
-Square of white fabric large enough to fit in your embroidery hoop (finished cut size is 5 x 5″)
-Embroidery hoop and needle
-Sewing machine with white thread, or needle and thread if you’re hand stitching the embroidered square onto the towel

Cherry tea towel 2

Step 1: Prewash and iron all fabric. Measure 2″ from the bottom edge and mark with a disappearing ink pen or chalk pencil. Repeat for other side to create a straight line 2″ from the bottom edge. Apply tape under the marks you just made, being careful to keep the tape as straight as possible.

Cherry tea towel 3b

Step 2: Mark the height of the block above the tape line. Repeat so you have two marks. Repeat for other side.

Cherry tea towel 4

Step 3: Add tape line above second mark, lined up with mark on right side.

Cherry tea towel 5

Step 4: Mix the paint to achieve the color you want. Apply paint to the block with the foam brush, being careful to keep the sides clean. Starting on the bottom left, stamp the squares onto the fabric. Reapply paint before each square is printed. Bottom left first, then align the top square with the top right corner of the first square and keep it level with the top piece of tape. Continue all the way across the fabric.

Cherry tea towel 6

Step 5: Remove the top strip of tape. Aligning the bottom corners of the block with the corners of the row underneath, stamp the squares all the way across to form the third row. Allow to dry, following manufacturer’s instructions.

Cherry tea towel 7

Step 6: While the paint is drying, start the embroidery. Print the pdf and use a light box or sunny window to trace the design onto the fabric.

Cherries with needle book

I make dots with permanent marker directly onto the fabric, but you can do a full outline with disappearing ink if you prefer. For my tutorial on how to make this little felt needle book, go here.

Cherry tea towel 9

Step 7: Embroider the design using three strands of embroidery floss. I used split stitch everywhere except the spots on the cherries where I used backstitch.

Cherry tea towel 10

I kept the backside of the embroidery as clean as possible so there wasn’t much of anything to show through to the front other than the design.

Cherry tea towel 11

Step 8: Centering the design, cut a 5″ square. I folded and pressed the sides first to be sure I had the placement I wanted.

Cherry tea towel 12

Step 9: Press the sides in first, then the top and bottom.

Cherry tea towel 13

Step 10: Center the embroidered square on the printed tea towel. Pin and topstitch with 1/8″ seam allowance.

Hi there, UCreate readers! I’m Jill from Create.Craft.Love. and I am over the moon excited to be kicking off the Summer Fat Quarter Series!
I love the convenience and affordability of the fat quarter, don’t you? {Although they can be a bit enabling since it does feed my fabric addiction…hee hee.}

Reversible Fat Quarter Potholders by Create. Craft. Love. #tutorial

I made these Reversible Fat Quarter Potholders ages ago to update my kitchen decor for each season. They are the perfect summer project – quick and easy! So let’s get started!

Materials:

Two coordinating fat quarters

Scrap fabric {for the loop holder}

Insul-Bright

Cutting mat

Acrylic ruler

Rotary cutter

Iron/Ironing board

Sewing machine

Begin by measuring your fabric into 9 inch by 9 inch squares using your acrylic ruler. Cut out the squares.
FQ potholder cutting
Set aside your fabric. Grab the scrap fabric and cut into 2 inch by 4 inch rectangle for your loop holder.
Next, you will measure and cut the Insul-Bright. {For those of you not familiar with Insul-Bright, it is a material that contains metal fibers and acts as an insulator against hot and cold temperatures. In a word – AWESOME!} You want this piece to be slightly smaller than the fabric squares. Cut to 8 inch by 8 inch square.
Lay your fabrics right side together. Pin around three quarters of the square, leaving upper corner of the fabric open to turn right side out when finished. Sew together.
FQ potholder pinned
Once sewn together, add the Insul-Bright square to one side. Flip over so the Insul-Bright is facing down and iron. This will adhere the Insul-Bright to the fabric.
FQ potholder insulbright
Turn right side out and set aside.
Take the scrap fabric. Fold the edges to the middle and iron.
FQ potholder tab folded
Fold in half again and iron.
FQ potholder ironed
Sew down the middle of the folded piece of fabric. And set aside.
FQ potholder tab sewn
Take the fabric square and fold the open edges inwards. I do this and iron it into place so it stays put while I try to pin it. Fold the loop holder in half and pin to the corner.
FQ potholder finishing
Top stitch around the parameter of the potholder. Trim the excess thread and voila! Finished!
I whipped up two of these in about thirty minutes! Easy peasy!

DIY Photo Display by Shanty 2 Chic - great recipe holder, too!
Hey Guys!!
We were so excited that our sweet friend Kari asked us to come play over at her blog this week!!
The theme of the week is right up our alley!
CHEAP… Whoop!
So my project is a great gift for neighbors, teachers, friends or family!  Here is the finished product…
It’s a super simple photo, recipe or memo display!
Here is how to make it!

All of these supplies can be found at craft stores and hardware stores.
You will start with some wood ovals and a bag of small candlesticks.  I got mine from Hobby Lobby.  The wood ovals were $.50 a piece and the candlesticks were $2.99 for the bag.
I used e6000 to attach a candlestick to one of my ovals.
For my big piece I used a 2x8x8 from Lowe’s.  Home Depot will cut it down for you if you don’t want to purchase the whole piece.  I cut my wood in 11″ pieces to use for these.  If you don’t have a saw just have Home Depot cut it for you when you buy it… Easy!
I bought these cute scrollies (professional term) from Hobby Lobby to add a little detail.  They were $1.99 for a package of 2.
I used my glue to attach it to the bottom of the wood.  I made two displays going different directions so I could show you both.
I added some e6000 to the now dry candlestick and attached the large wood piece to it.
Drying…
I found these great finials at Lowe’s.  I love them and use them on LOTS.  They are $1.86 for 2.
I drilled a small hole in the top of the wood.  You don’t have to drill a hole but it does make this part much faster!
And added my finial.
I found these clips at Walmart.  They are $1.88 for a pack of 4.
I added some e6000 to one of the clips….
And stuck it to my display.
Here they are ready for some spray paint.
I sprayed both displays with Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch.  I used Heirloom White on one and Canyon Black on the other. After they were dry I used my sanding block to shanty the edges up a bit!  Here is how they turned out!
Photo Display Tutorial by Shanty 2 Chic - great gift idea!
Recipe / Photo Holder Tutorial by Shanty 2 Chic
Hope you like them!  They are fun, easy and best of all CHEAP!
If you want to make these for just $5 a piece you need to make 4 of them.  Because the supplies come in bags and groups that is the best way to get more bang for your buck!  I will be giving mine to my kids teachers this year.  My mom is my neighbor so she may just get one too!
T
hanks Miss Kari for having us!
